A 20-year-old man is charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with a shooting near Trupp Park in Bennett on Aug. 29, the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office confirmed today.
Joey Prieto, a resident of Bennett, is suspected of attempted first-degree murder and carrying a concealed weapon.
Adams County sheriff’s officials responded to Trupp Park, where there was an ongoing soccer practice, on the afternoon of Aug. 29 to reports of shots fired. Prieto was detained nearby and no one was hurt in the shooting.
Investigators determined that though the shooting took place in public, the shooting was an isolated incident between individuals who knew each other.
Bennett Elementary School, which is located eight blocks from the park, was placed on lockdown during the shooting, and students were later evacuated to Bennett High School to be reunited with their families. The school also canceled classes and other extracurriculars on Aug. 30.
Bennett, population 2,862, is 37 miles east of Denver along Interstate 70.
Prieto is set to appear for a bond hearing on Sept. 20 in Adams County.
