The Aurora Police Department’s economic crimes unit warned of a payment scam at gas stations in a release Tuesday.
According to the release, thieves have been damaging the contactless payment sensors and placing skimming devices at gas pumps, stealing customers’ credit card information after they manually swipe it for payment.
The contactless sensors become inoperable after the thieves drill a hole in them, according to the release.
Police say patrons should notify gas station employees if there is a hole drilled into the contactless payment screen. Potentially tampered pumps will be shut down and inspected for a skimmer by officers from the unit.
