Although Netflix leans heavily on animated films from Sony Pictures Animation, DreamWorks Animation, and Universal Pictures, the streaming giant also has an impressive lineup of original animated movies. Earlier this summer, Netflix premiered Nimona to great acclaim, and now The Monkey King is making waves for its fantastic visuals and its updated take on a classic Chinese story. This month, Netflix has also added the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, as well as DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2.
While many of these movies are very kid or family-friendly, animation is a medium, not a genre. It also happens to be able to do things that would be extremely difficult to replicate in live-action. Some of these movies are even genuinely emotionally affecting, especially another recent Netflix arrival, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. So if you’re looking for some examples of what can be done with the medium of animation, you’ll find them right here in our updated list of the best animated movies on Netflix right now.
